About Fruit Connections

Fruit Connections was started in 2017 after a trip to London. Funny where and how our ideas come about! A visit to the Portrait Gallery snack bar and restaurant overlooking the rooftops of London-a scene straight out of Mary Poppins-was our first foray into the world of elderberries. Elderflower cordial was on the menu. We tried it and loved the delicate perfumey taste. We decided to learn why elderberries were the "new thing". Actually, we found out that elderberries were one of oldest "new things" on the planet. We saw first-hand how popular and essential they were/are to British culture. Lots of people there "live" for Spring and elderflower season, where they gather the flowers to make home-made cordial. If some of the elderflowers make it to fruition, the elderberries are used copiously for jams, jellies and sauces for meats, and poultry. Let's not forget that elderberries and elderflowers have been used for centuries for their medicinal and nutraceutical benefits!

On returning to the United States, because we wanted to learn more, we ordered 1,000 elderberry sticks to start a "little experiment" and Fruit Connections was formed. Incorporating some of Joe's established fruit trees and bushes to the inventory, we now offer these trees, bushes, fruits and cuttings for sale.

Who is Janet and why is this her passion?

Good question! Janet is a girl from the south- south of New York, that is. Brooklyn, to be exact. She grew up in a large family and her mother resembled the late Queen Elizabeth. She had a love of perennial gardening, in particular, which Janet seemed to "glob" onto. The culture was of growing things, and even the hostas that grew in the yard had lineage. They could be traced back to an uncle's garden in Connecticut, then later transplanted to Cooperstown, Fairport, and Lake Ontario. Janet went to college and studied French and Education, led an interesting life of living and traveling in Europe and various locations in the United States. Always interested in good nutrition, she was named (or accused) by an older sister of being "Bark and Berry".

Funny that that is exactly what Janet does now, "Bark and Berry"! Being outside is her favorite place to be, and hearing  wonderful elderberry stories from customers is a joy. Janet can often be seen participating at the Rochester Public Market, and at the Special Event Sales in Geneva. Each year customers tell of how tall their bushes are getting and how much they are producing, and this is music to her ears. Her children are now growing their own elderberry bushes, fruit trees, and currants. They have green thumbs, and the culture of growing things is again being passed on through the generations!

About Joe

"A farmer outstanding in his field!"

Joe's family has roots on Long Island, where the family had a long history in poultry farming. Over 50 years ago, when the LI farm was purchased to put in the LI Expressway, Joe and his father made a trip to Geneva, NY, in the middle of winter, in an old-fashioned NYS snowstorm, to scout out land for fruit orchards. They succeeded in finding the perfect spot. So, when Joe was 15 the family moved from Bethpage, to Geneva leaving the turkeys behind. After finishing high school in Geneva, Joe went to college, fulfilled his duty in the US Navy onboard the USS Reaper (minesweeper) before deciding that, maybe, returning to the family farm was what he was destined to do. Raising poultry and growing fruit do not have a lot in common as he and his family learned, but trial and error, determination and education led to a successful fruit-growing business. Joe prides himself on his fruit-growing expertise in W. NY, his absolute love of the land, the fruit culture, his fellow farmers, neighbors, friends, customers, employees and family. Joe and his family founded Red Jacket Orchards, now also the line of Red Jacket juices. Joe is also is the founder of White Springs Orchards Nursery and co-owner of Fruit Connections, LLC. What a guy!

WHO WE ARE
Fruit Connections is a small company specializing in the growing of fruit, fruit trees and bushes.
Fruit Connections is a nursery and old-fashioned orchard founded in the 1950’s. It is steeped in the love
of nature and beautiful surroundings of Upstate New York’s Finger Lakes region. It is surrounded by
beautiful farmland and the fresh air off Seneca Lake.

WHAT’S OUR PASSION
Our passion is to offer the public healthful living lifestyles and good nutrition through tree-ripened fruit, nursery-grown fruit trees and berry bushes at affordable prices. Eating well should not be an extravagance! A trip to the grocery store in 2024 seems to tell us it is. Now, by offering you a chance at growing your own food, you will be saving money, and will be feeling the same glorious connection with nature that we do, every day.
It sounds a little corny, but we think that there is at least a little bit of “farmer” in all of us. We think we
share a basic desire and innate yearning to dig our hands into rich soil, grow our own food, and nourish
our families.

WHAT MAKES US SO DIFFERENT
Most of our fruit trees and some of our berry bushes are offered and sold “bare-root”. This means that nursery trees and bushes are dug from the nursery, while dormant, and are bundled and kept moist in a cold storage until sold. * Seasonally, we
have special events which allow for the public to buy directly from the nursery. See “Events” on our
website menu. We are a smaller farm with an experienced orchardist- Joe- with 50 years of experience, who is on-site and available to give advice and pointers on growing. Our sales are seasonal- mostly in the early Spring and late Fall when conditions are best for planting. We sometimes offer classes with instructions for planting at our sales, and you can also find help on our website.

Why would anyone want to buy a tree that is “bare-root”?
Growing a tree in real soil, where the roots can grow and spread in a way that nature intended is better
for the tree. Growing a tree in a pot is a lot like a person wearing a way-too-small pair of shoes. Because
our trees and bushes are grown in Upstate New York, they are already acclimated to our “interesting”,
and diverse climate!

What We Produce

Fruit
As mentioned, we offer tree-ripened fruits in season. You know the quote, “To everything there is a
season”. Especially with fruit. Joe, the experienced farmer of 50 years, adheres to this belief. Growing
a good healthy tree of the right variety is the foundation for any good fruit production.

Bare-root trees
The trees are offered from cold storage and are ready for planting at the time of purchase. A complete
list of varieties follows in the Order section to include Apples, Peaches, Plums, Apricots, and Pears.
Note: With rare exceptions the trees we provide are saplings between 4' to 6' tall at the time of sale.

Elderberry Bushes
In "the olden days" every farmhouse had at least one elderberry bush that was used for pies, medicinal purposes, and perhaps even a little elderberry wine-to be drunk only on very special occasions! We offer a few varieties of elderberries.  Much in demand, they can be purchased in small pots or bare-root. Easy to grow, elderberries love the sun, and are very thirsty. The French name for elderberries is "Sureau", meaning, literally, "on the water". When they are found in the wild, they will normally be close to a water souce; a stream, a culvert, pond, the side of the road, under a drainpipe, etc. You want to make sure, of course, that the water source is clean and not subject to run-off from treated road surfaces. At the moment, we have a good supply of Certified Organic Elderberry and Currant bushes available for purchase.
Elderberry bushes can be planted in the garden, of course, or also do well as patio plants. They do not
need 100% sun, but they do need a lot of water, especially during hot spells because their root structure is close to the surface. As you will see in the photos, the flowers are stunningly beautiful, fragrant and flavorful, too. Many people use the flowers for teas,
cordials, and other cooking purposes. The berries, in high demand, are great for elixirs, tonics, sauces for meats, desserts and more.

Currant Bushes
Red and black currants are available and are wonderful ingredients for exotic drinks, jams, jellies,
garnishes, and sauces for meats and poultry. The currants are also available in pots or bare root.
